Barcelona confirms the news of Messi leaving

After being in the Spanish Club Barcelona for over two decades, Lionel Messi has decided to leave. On Tuesday, the club confirmed this to The Associated Press. The contract between Messi and Barcelona started in September 2000 on a paper napkin. Messi was only 13 at the time. There are reports of Messi joining the English club Manchester City or French club PSG.

The announcement comes 11 days after Barcelona lost 8–2 to FC Bayern Munich in the Champions League quarter-finals. This is, by far, the worst defeat in Messi's career and the history of the Barcelona club. Messi has made a record by winning six Ballon d'Or awards during his time at Barcelona as the world's top player. He has helped the club win 10 Spanish League titles and four Champions League crowns.

On 30th June, Messi became the 7th player in the world to score 700 goals. This includes 630 goals for the club and 70 goals for his country, Argentina. The record of the most number of goals belongs to Austrian footballer Josef Bican for 805 goals.

Messi will no longer attend the team's training sessions or coronavirus tests, according to Spanish radio station Onda Cero. The board of directors, confirming the news of Messi's request to leave the club, called an emergency meeting to discuss the same.

Messi has a contract with Barcelona till 2021 but he has grown disappointed with events on and off the pitch at Camp Nou in recent months. He is the richest footballer in the worth with an estimated worth is 700 million euros according to his release clause.
