Busting all myths about your phone battery: a comprehensive guide

Most people are guilty of leaving their smartphones to charge every night before sleeping, for easier access in the morning. But there's still a lot of questions regarding it: Is it safe to do so? Should they let their battery reach 0% before charging their phones? And this is all you need to know about the correct use of your phone.

Smartphones are designed in such a way that they know how much power is left in the battery. So, when the charging is complete and the battery reaches 100%, the smart chip in the phone stops the power supply after that. This is also why we call them smartphones.

But that doesn't mean that leaving it on charge often has no impact on the battery life because it does. As time goes on, your battery life deteriorates. If you are someone who changes your phone every two years, then it is quite alright for you to charge it overnight. But those who want to keep their smartphone for a long time should not unnecessarily charge the battery.

Hatem Zeine, the founder of wireless power technology company Ossia, says that it is very important to ensure that your smartphone does not overheat and for that, you should charge your phone with less powerful chargers.

There's also a myth about letting your battery drop to 0% before charging, but there is no need for that. Early cell phones had nickel-cadmium batteries, which performed better if you charged your phone after draining the battery.

Today's smartphones use lithium-ion batteries, so you can charge your phone at any battery percentage. Some experts say that lithium-ion batteries can wear out faster if completely discharged. So you should charge whenever you need to, the battery would be fine.

You can also use your phone while charging but it may take a little longer to charge fully. That's because it uses the electricity from the plug instead of using the battery's charge to power what you do.

If you turn off your phone, it will charge faster because there's no app running using the battery. Usually, opening just 1 app doesn't use a lot of power, but more than 10 apps will discharge your battery faster. So, when your phone is off, any electricity flowing from the charger can go directly to charging.

It is always better to charge your phone with the original charger it came with. The charger is made according to standards established to charge your phone using the correct voltage. A different charger or cord can damage your phone's charging port and in turn, your battery. If unavoidable, you can use cord or charger with an approval stamp from the phone manufacturer.
