Surat Fire: Massive fire after explosion at ONGC plant, no casualty reported

On 24 September, late at night, there has been a severe fire in Surat, Gujarat. The fire broke out at the ONGC plant here at around 3:00 am with a massive explosion. People could hear the sound of the blast from 10 kilometres. The shockwave could be felt up to three to four kilometres away. After this, high flames started rising which could also be seen from a distance.


The official twitter account of ONGC tweeted this at 7:30 in the morning, "A fire was observed in the Hazira Gas processing plant in the morning today. The fire has been brought under control. There is no casualty or injury to any person."

Firefighters got to the scene and tried controlling the fire but it was raging on till early morning. However, ONGC claims that the situation is completely under control. The fire is assumed to have been caused by a rupture in the 36-inch Uran-Mumbai gas pipeline. Following this, all terminals have been temporarily shut down as a precautionary measure.

According to official information, there were three consecutive blasts that took place at two terminals of the Hazira-based ONGC plant. There's been some material damage caused by the blast and the fire but no-one was injured in the incident.

According to eyewitnesses, the explosion was so loud that it broke the windows of nearby houses and people left their houses in a panic.


In a statement as quotes by ANI, Surat Collector Dhawal Patel said, "Around 3:05 am last night, three consecutive blasts took place at the ONGC Hazira plant which led to the fire. Seven fire tenders and several firefighters immediately reached the spot to provide relief. No casualties have been reported so far."

He added, "We are relieved that the fire was contained inside the premises of the plant and did not escalate to an off-site emergency."

The fire was contained to the site meaning that people outside of the zone were safe. A team of experts has been gathered to find out the cause of the accident.
