Bharat bandh tomorrow - Why and What can you expect

The Confederation of All India Traders (CAIT) has called for Bharat Bandh on Friday (26 February), seeking a review of GST rules. During the bandh, markets across the country will remain closed and there will be no business activities. Business organizations in all the states of the country have decided to join this bandh.

CAIT has called for an Indian trade shutdown, calling several recent amendments to the GST rules adverse to trade and demanding a ban on e-commerce company Amazon immediately.

In response to the CAIT’s Bharat Bandh tomorrow, around 40,000 trade associations across the country have decided to extend their support and close their businesses. All India Transport Welfare Association (AITWA) of the organized road transportation companies is also supporting tomorrow’s bandh and has decided to hold a Chakka Jaam.

"AITWA demands abolishing the E-way bill as the newly introduced E-invoice is good enough for preventing tax evasion. Vehicles may be tracked by the Government using Fast Tag connectivity to E-invoice. Transporters should not be subject to any penalty by the Government for any time-based compliance target of transit," said AITWA National President Mahendra Arya.

The CAIT as well as AITWA wants the government to take off certain rules from the new e-bill which they think affects them adversely. They have also asked the government to withdraw heavy taxes on fuel prices and make it uniform across India.

Speaking on the Bandh, Arya said, "All state level-transport associations have confirmed their support to AITWA in this one-day non-operation of transport in protest of the fuel price hike and scrapping of new E-way bill laws introduced by Government of India."

"The nature of the movement is to reject booking and movement of all E-Way Bill oriented goods for one day. All transport companies are asked to park their vehicles between 6 am to 8 pm as a symbolic protest. All transport godowns will display the protest banners. All customers will be approached by transport companies not to book or load any goods on February 26, 2021," he added.

In a statement released by the CAIT, they said that they haven't gotten a solid response from the GST Council, “We highly regret such a dismal attitude and picture of the GST which has compelled the trade union leaders attending the conference to call for a Bharat Trade Bandh."

The AITWA has asked transport companies to stop their vehicles between 6 am and 8 pm. Apart from it, various commercial markets across the country will also remain shut tomorrow. In over 1500 places, they will place dharnas.
