Maharashtra Mattress Factory busted, uses discarded masks as stuffing

On 12th April, Maharashtra police busted a mattress-making factory in the Jalgaon district. The factor was using discarded masks, to stuff the mattress and pillows instead of cotton or other permitted material used to stuff mattresses.

A case has been filed against the owner of the unit, Amjad Ahmed Mansoori. While the police has launched an investigation to find the others involved in this racket.

The Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation (MIDC), Jalgaon was informed of the alleged racket being carried out at the Maharashtra Mattress Centre. Who then acted upon this information and carried out a raid on said factory.

"When the officials visited the premises of the factory in Kusumba village of MIDC, they found a mattress being stuffed with used masks," said Additional Superintendent of Police Chandrakant Gawali.

"A case was registered against the factory owner, Amjad Ahmed Mansoori. The police are now probing the involvement of others in the racket," said Mr Gawali.

The police also found a pile of used masks lying around on the premises which they set on fire.

Amid the spike in Covid cases, Indian government made it compulsory for all its citizens to wear a mask. India currently has 100 mask manufacturing units whose production has now surged as the second wave of covid is upon us and hitting hard.

According to the Central Pollution Control Board data, between June and September 2020 alone, over 18,000 tones of Covid-19 related bio-medical waste was generated, including gloves and face masks.

On 20th March 2021, in a Rajya Sabha meeting, the minister of Chemical and Fertilizer and Shipping, Mansukh Lal Mandaviya informed that every day 1.5 crore masks are currently being manufactured in India.

With this extra burden of these biomedical waste, our waste management system is overburdened, unable to properly dispose of it.
