State-wide curfew imposed in Maharashtra, IPL matches to continue as planned


There's been a steep increase in the number of COVID-19 patients in Maharashtra and the government is struggling to contain this surge. 

Following the ever increasing number and blatant disregard of the restrictions, on 13th April, the Chief Minister of Maharashtra, Uddhav Thackeray announced even stricter curfew-like restrictions in the state. 

These new rules will be imposed from 14th April to 1st May and it will restrict the movement of people in the state from 8 pm. 

Calling it a strict Janta curfew, Thackeray issued a prohibitory orders under Section 144 which are to be imposed in the state from 14th April night till 1st May, exempting only essential services.  

According to the order, no person is allowed to be in a public place without a valid reason. All the establishments, public place, activities, services stall should remain closed, except the ones exempted which will remain open between 7 am and 8 pm on working days. 

But this curfew-like restrictions will not affect IPL 2021. 

Mumbai is going to host 8 more games at the Wankhede Stadium. Just on 15th April, there is going to be a fierce battle between Rajasthan Royals and Delhi Capitals and on the very next day Punjab Kings will play against Chennai Super Kings. 

According to ANI, "No effect on Mumbai matches as we have special permission, everything will go ahead as planned and we will take all necessary precautions.

Several states are considering to impose another lockdown to curb its spread. And Maharastra is among the hardest hit state in India during the second wave of COVID-19 infections. Just on 13th April, CM Uddhav Thackeray announced the decision to impose a statewide curfew-like restrictions. 

While addressing the situation, Thackeray said, "We are imposing strict restrictions which will come into effect from 8 pm tomorrow. Section 144 to be imposed in the entire state from tomorrow. I will not term this as lockdown." 

"Local train and bus services for essential services only, petrol pumps, financial institutions associated with SEBI and construction work to continue, hotel/restaurants to remain closed only take-away, home deliveries allowed," he added.
